Ah yes, the much talked about quadcopter. That piece of gear that every videographer and filmmaker craves to have in their bag of tricks. But what is the best quadcopter for GoPro?

GoPro is the brand par excellence when it comes to buying high-quality ActionCams. Since one can rely on high-quality footage and longevity when buying a camera from the manufacturer, you might want to buy a quadcopter to go with your GoPro.

A quadcopter, or more commonly called a drone, is a piece of kit that enables you to shoot aerial footage. You will have seen drone / aerial shots in videos, movies and TV shows that you’ve watched. Quadcopters have never been more prevalent.

Not all quadcopters are created equal, though, and this is why we’ve put together this list of our favorite quadcopters for GoPro.

When using a drone with a GoPro, there are a few unique aspects to keep note of and it’s certainly different to combining a drone with an ordinary camera.

    Why? A couple of reasons:

    • Firstly, the GoPro is lighter than most conventional cameras, so you won’t be bearing as much weight on the drone itself.
    • Secondly, the GoPro is designed to be more rugged and durable than most cameras out there. It’s kind of its selling point!

We’ll tackle this list with those points in mind, and they’ll be mentioned throughout the discussion of the various quadcopters.

    Best Quadcopter for GoPro

Let’s take a detailed look at 7 of our favorite quadcopters for GoPro. There’s no special order here, but we’ll cover the pros and cons of each as we go through the list.

    1. GoPro Karma drone

There are a large number of drones on the market that are compatible the GoPro. Among them is a quadcopter developed by GoPro, the GoPro Karma.

After some improvements made to the drone developed by the ActionCam manufacturer, we get a very positive result with the GoPro Karma.

Depending on the price, different equipment variants exist for this model. For example, combining this with the GoPro Hero 6 is a great idea.

Fully loaded, the GoPro Karma weighs a full 1900 g, but it is powered by extremely powerful brushless motors and has a powerful battery.

According to the manufacturer, the fully loaded GoPro Karma drone has about 20 minutes flight time. In our GoPro Karma test, we only got to about 16-18 minutes, which was probably also due to our flight behavior. You need about 120 minutes to charge the flight battery.

For perfect video footage with a GoPro camera, we think the Karma is currently the best aircraft because it was developed directly by the manufacturer of the GoPro cameras. Can you get better than that?

Here’s another top drone for GoPro.

    2. Walkera QR-X350

If you want to look at a lower-pricedoption, we highly recommend the Walkera QR-350 quadcopter.

It is compatible with the GoPro cameras GoPro 3, 3+, 4, flies safely, is stable and very reliable. Of course, you do not get any DJI quality here, but this model is perfect for flight novices.

It is equipped with a G-2D Brushless Gimbal System, which holds your GoPro camera in position.

Also advantageous are the numerous functions and assistance systems, which ensure that a quiet flight is guaranteed and clean video recordings are handled as you’d expect.

The Walkera QR-X350 Pro can also do some cool stunts and is fast and agile in the air. But you wouldn’t be showing off with your drone now, would you? [IMG]

For an additional fee (fairly low price), you also get GPS, a home function and a flight mode with which it is particularly easy to produce beautiful video recordings. This is the IOC mode (Intelligent Orientation Control mode).

In some other drones, this feature is referred to as the “headless flight mode”. When it is active, the position of the camera and front of the drone no longer matters. The quadcopter simply follows the joystick movements regardless of how it is in the air. Pretty handy!

    3. 3DR Solo drone

The 3DR Solo Drone is perfect for you if you are looking for a drone that works well with GoPro cameras of all sizes and weights.

The quadcopter has been specially designed to work exclusively with GoPro cameras. For the development, the company GoPro and 3D Robotics have cooperated with each other to design and manufacture this great piece of kit.

This cooperative relationship on the project brings many benefits. For example, the Gimbal head is designed so precisely for GoPro devices that the installation of the cameras is possible quickly and without much tinkering.

A shake-free and error-free image is also guaranteed if you use the 3DR Solo Drone in combination with GoPro cameras.

Gimbal head – 3DR solo drone extra for GoPro

The GoPro ActionCams HERO3, 3+, 4 Silver and Black fit perfectly in the 3-axis stabilization gimbal.

A contact on the gimbal head records the signal from the camera, forwards it to the drone, and sends the live image directly to your remote control and your smartphone or tablet.

The live image has an HD resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, but on the memory card, the full picture quality is recorded, which you have previously set.

Since the maximum load of the gimbal head is only 420 grams, it is not possible to use cameras other than ActionCams for this drone. This can be a disadvantage. If you’re looking for a drone for GoPro cameras anyway, then the 3DR Solo is perfect.

However, as we mentioned earlier, you might be looking to purchase a quadcopter for use with other types of cameras and not just a GoPro. Who knows what kit you might have down the road?

Unfortunately, the GoPro Hero 5 series does not work with this gimbal head because the ports are not compatible.

On the other, anyone who owns a GoPro of the 3rd or 4th generation will easily be able to take great videos, because thanks to the precise cooperation between the GoPro and the drone system, access to all settings and functions of the camera is possible without breaking down the GoPro itself.

Video recording can be triggered during the flight via smartphone or tablet. This makes the 3DR Solo Drone one of the best drones for GoPro cameras.

    4. Yuneec Q500 Typhoon

A drone for GoPro cameras with excellent price/performance ratio is the Yuneec Q500 Typhoon, which we can highly recommend. It is perfect for the GoPro 3, 3+ and 4, as well as the Black Edition.

The Typhoon is very stable in the air and produces clean, high-quality images.

The fact that this drone produces such high-quality video recordings, is mainly due to the high-quality gimbal and the camera positioning.

What we find particularly cool is the handheld Gimbal Steadygrip G, which is included in the delivery. So you can also do normal selfie video, if that’s your thing.

This is a really safe drone for your GoPro and it comes with a couple of thumbs up from us.

    5. DJI Phantom 2

Considered a bit of an oldtimer at this point, the Phantom 2 still packs a punch.

If you look at the fast pace of the drone market and look at the release date of the DJI Phantom 2, you could almost compare this quadcopter to a classic car!

Nevertheless, it is perfect for some GoPro cameras. The gimbal has been specially designed to fit the GoPro Series 3 and 4 and blend in with the drone effectively.

If you do not have a GoPro yet, we recommend a Phantom 3 Pro or the Phantom 4 instead because they have better cameras.

Why do we list this drone here anyway? It now has a very good price/performance ratio and so offers a solid buying opportunity.

But even as a new product, it has a huge price fall behind, because after the release of the DJI Phantom 3 many have switched to the successor and have sold their Phantom 2. Either way, this is a great piece of kit and could be the quadcopter for you.

    6. DJI Phantom 3

The Phantom 3 is also perfect for ActionCams, as the gimbal is designed to work perfectly with such cameras.

Quality is very important for this model, as is typically the case for DJI drones. The Phantom 3 comes with new features, including being able to fly in FPV mode.

In our test of the DJI Phantom 3 , we achieved a top speed of 60 kilometers per hour and a flight time of 25 minutes, which roughly corresponds to the manufacturer’s specifications. With battery and propeller, the Phantom 3 weighs about 1.2 kg.

Even with the Phantom 3’s price tag, you’re getting a great piece of equipment that will be a workhorse drone for you for a long time, because quality pays off in the long run.

Another option here is to consider your budget and your needs in the longrun. If you have a fairly large budget, you could consider buying the more expensive (and better equipped) Mavic Pro or the Phantom 4 Advanced right now.

The choice with DJI is huge and we include the Phantom 3 here (as opposed to the Phantom 4) purely because of the price point and the longer track record of the Phantom 3. We certainly love the Phantom 4, too!

Cheap quadcopters for your GoPro camera

For a smaller budget, you can also find quadcopters that are great for use with ActionCams.

For some models, however, you have to compromise on the performance as soon as a GoPro is installed. The performance of the following drone is sometimes a bit too low to fly with the additional cameras fast and agile performance through the air.

As always, your mileage may vary (pardon the pun!) Ensure that you do plenty of research on your needs and requirements

    7. Syma X8C

The Syma X8C is delivered “ready to fly” and is perfect for flight novices. So if you have never flown with a drone and are looking for a very cheap model for your GoPro, then the Syma X8C should be included in the shortlist.

For the price point, you should not expect too much compared with the professional options discussed in this article.

The flight time is just about 7 minutes and the 2s LiPo battery has to charge a whole 2 hours, So we recommend that if you do go with this drone, you should buy at least 2-3 more batteries. You can buy them in various online shops quite cheap.

Why are GoPro cameras suitable for flying?

In model flying, every gram of weight counts, as you get flight time and mobility from a very limited source (battery). For this reason, the best possible ratio of weight to quality is taken into account with each component – even when choosing the camera.

Aside from using a smaller drone with a camera that has a rigid, fixed mounted onboard camera, ActionCams are often the method of choice to capture video from a drone flight. This is especially true for extreme sports videographers and those who are hobbyists.

GoPro models best combine the required characteristics and, with their robust, waterproof construction, provide the best basis for flying with a quadcopter (and occasional minor crashes!).

Due to the technical developments in recent years, GoPros continue to be top in terms of image quality, but quadcopter manufacturers have turned away from it.

Where there used to be a lot of great options for ActionCams, these are hardly found anymore today. Drones like the DJI Mavic Pro and DJI Mavic Air have standardized the small portable and easily flyable camera.

Still, the quadcopters in this list represent what we consider the best of the bunch on the market right now!

Best Quadcopter for GoPro – In Conclusion

So we’ve come to the end of our list of the best quadcopters for GoPro. When making any purchasing decision, you need to answer a few questions that normally revolve around budget and your project requirements.

Here’s what you should be considering when buying a quadcopter for GoPro:

    • Your specific project requirements.
    • Your budget.
    • Weight of the quadcopter you’d like.
    • Portability of the quadcopter.
    • The bells and whistles of the quadcopter.

By “bell and whistles” we mean the fancy features and design aspects that some quadcopters come with. For example, sensors on the quadcopter that alert you if you’re going too close to a solid object that might cause a crash.

All in all, you need to consider all questions and really think deeply about what you need the quadcopter for. It’s not a chap purchase, so getting this right from the start is very important.

We hope this article on the best quadcopter for GoPro has been useful. And we wish you luck in choosing the right quadcopter for your GoPro!
