What do you get when you mix Nikon Z cameras, Thunderbolt 3.0 enabled PCs and ProGrade Digital CFexpress 1.0 memory cards with 1TB? You get read speeds up to 1400MB/s.

ProGrade Digital demonstrated at CES 2019 how fast its CFexpress 1.0 memory card is when paired with the right equipment. The company took part in a technology demosntration highlighting how its memory card works with Thunderbolt 3.0. Professional photographers using the Nikon Z series cameras demonstrated their workflows on both mobile and desktop paired with the ProGrade Digital CFexpress card and Thunderbolt 3.0-enabled PCs.

“ProGrade Digital is delighted to be participating in this exciting technology demonstration highlighting the speed of the ProGrade Digital 1TB CFexpress card and Thunderbolt 3.0 in the digital workflow,” said Wes Brewer, founder and CEO of ProGrade Digital. “With read speeds up to 1400MB/s, this technology provides peak performance for offloading cinema-quality, video and still image files at speeds that are at least three times faster than ever before.”

    The need for speed

ProGrade Digital was not alone showing 1TB cards at CES 2019. Lexar also had one 1TB card, although a SD card. But we’re moving towards capacities that we would not even dream of some years ago. It took the industry 15 years to move from the first 1GB cards to these 1TB solutions, and in the process we’ve not only been able to achieve higher capacities but also faster speeds. That’s something the new CFexpress 1.0 delivers, being capable of 1,400 MB/s continuous read speed, with a write speed of 1000MB/s.

Built in a metal enclosure/encasement to endure high temperatures while providing better thermal conductivity, featuring built-in thermal throttling to protect card and its content in the event of overheating, the ProGrade Digital CFexpress 1.0 is fully compliant with CompactFlash Association 1.0 specification and is XQD host interoperable with firmware support.

ProGrade Digital CFast 2.0 received a Lucie Award

Last October, ProGrade Digital had its ProGrade Digital CFast 2.0 recognized by industry peers as “Best Memory Card” at the fourth annual Lucie Technical Awards, an initiative of the Lucie Foundation. The 2018 winners were announced during the PhotoPlus Conference + Expo, at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, in New York.

Hossein Farmani, founder of The Lucie Technical Awards commented then, “This evening we announced the 28 winners of the coveted Lucie Technical Awards from a roster of 152 finalists representing 64 individual companies. Our jury of experts chose these winners as the most innovative additions to the photographic world’s toolbox.”

Before we close, a note on what may sound like science-fiction: imagine an SD card with a capacity of 128 TB, able to deliver up to 985 MB/sec transfer rate, while keeping compatibility with existing billions SD hosts in the market. It may seem like Sci-Fi, but it was announced last Summer at the Mobile World Congress, in Shanghai, by the SD Association, and it already has a name: SD Express. Apparently the need for speed goes hand-in-hand with larger capacities.
