2020 marks the 10th anniversary of the birth of Atomos, the Australian monitor/recorder company. For this occasion, there is a time-limited discount on their 5″ HDMI-only recorder/monitor: the Atomos Ninja V. Let’s take a closer look at it!

    Atomos 10th Anniversary

Can you believe Atomos has been on the market for ten years already? Time flies, and in 2010, Atomos’ CEO Jeromy Young released the original Ninja HD HDMI monitor recorder. The idea behind this product was simple: unleashing Apple ProRes recording capabilities to affordable DSLR cameras, while also being a monitor.

The original Atomos Ninja made a bridge between the camera world and the post-production world. Indeed, Apple ProRes files are much easier and less resource-hungry to edit in an NLE than the H.264/H.265 files coming out of most of the mirrorless/DSLR cameras out there. Since this successful launch in 2010, Atomos released dozens of other monitors/recorders, including the Ninja Blade, Ninja Star, Inferno, Shogun lines and so on.

The Atomos Ninja V is a 5″ HDMI-only monitor/recorder that can record up to 4K at 60fps in Apple ProRes and AVID DNxHR. All your footage is stored on purpose-built and reliable mini-SSDs for a fast post-production workflow when you are done shooting. Also, on cameras like the Nikon Z6, the Ninja V can record in Apple ProRes RAW over HDMI up to 6K at 30 fps. You can watch our first look review of that ProRes RAW feature here.

The Ninja V features a 10-bit FRC IPS screen with a brightness of 1000 cd/m². While the Ninja V is an HDMI-only monitor/recorder, you can add various modules at the back of it to expand its capabilities. Indeed, you can plug in additional modules like the wireless sync, NDI, or SDI input/output extensions to suit your needs. Finally, the Ninja V is powered via a Sony L-type battery. As an indication, with a Sony NP-F970 battery, you can get around 2 hours of recording time.

All in all, the Atomos Ninja V is an excellent rugged on-camera monitor/recorder for mirrorless/DSLR camera shooters. To start celebrating this 10th anniversary, Atomos is having a $50.00 discount – so it is $649.00 – on the Atomos Ninja V for a limited time. Other deals on Atomos products should be announced later this year.
