The release of version 2.0 of The EVA1 firmware is imminent. With it, indie shooters will have a camera on steroids in their hands: All-I codecs, RAW output, support for more Sigma Art lenses and improved broadcast codecs. Let’s dive right in! LongGOP codecs are not bad per se but I wouldn’t consider them as my first choice either. With this updated EVA1 firmware we can finally wave goodbye to these and welcome the brand new All-Intra flavours! In case you need a little refresher on this camera, head over to our initial coverage here. All-I Codecs and RAW Output this update has actually been announced for a long time. Now, that it’s here check out the full list of updated codecs: ALL-Intra codecs 4:2:2 10bits 4K/UHD up to 30p@400 Mbps 2K/HD up to 60p@200 Mbps 2K/HD up to 30p@100 Mbps ALL-Intra codecs for High Frame rate 4K/UHD ~30p@400 Mbps 2K/HD ~120p@400 Mbps Another cool new feature is the RAW output via 6G SDI: 5.7K RAW at up to 30p, CROP 4K RAW at up to 60p and CROP 2K RAW at up to 120p. These two features, All-I recording and RAW output are transforming the already good EVA1 camera into a very capable (and not too pricey) indie cinema camera. But there’s more. Broadcast Codecs & Sigma Art Lenses If you’re working for fast turnaround broadcast stations, a ready-to-go interlaced codec might be needed to avoid time-consuming transcoding. For these applications, The new EVA1 firmware sports the following options: FullHD (1920×1080) – ALL-Intra 100Mbps 10-bit 4:2:2 @59.94i/50i FullHD (1920×1080) – LongGOP 50Mbps 10-bit 4:2:2 @59.94i/50i Last but not least, the new 2.0 firmware enables full support for a number of highly popular Sigma Art Lenses, including: 12-24 F4 DG HSM 24-70 F2.8 DG OS HSM 14mm F1.8 DG HSM 30mm F1.4 DC HSM 85mm F1.4 DG HSM 135mm F1.8 DG HSM A few other additions like LCD signal cloning to HDMI, as well as additional home screen indicators improve monitoring in the camera. To improve the workflow, Panasonic has also added the capability to output ancillary data for RAW such as time code, REC flag and also VANC metadata on SDI. Conclusion The updated version 2.0 of the EVA1 firmware will be available as a free download by the end of March. The already impressive dual-ISO EVA1 camera gets even more awesome with the updated features. And making it available free of charge is a nice gesture from Panasonic.
