SIGMA has just announced yet another lens for its I-series of “Premium Compact Primes” for mirrorless cameras, the 20mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary. This is the fourth F2 lens to complement the already available 24mm, 35mm, and 65mm focal lengths. The newly announced 20mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary is an ultra-wide-angle prime lens in a pretty small form factor, weighing in at just 370g and measuring 72.4 mm in length. The lens is available in either L-Mount or Sony E-Mount. It offers AF or manual focus operation, as well as a manual aperture ring. The entire lens body is made of metal, so this lens could be a workhorse for everyday use, at least in terms of ruggedness. SIGMA 20mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary Following the three already available I-series prime lenses with fast F2 aperture, namely the 24mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary, the 35mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary, and the 65mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary, this new 20mm focal length seems to be a decent fit when composing a set of compact, yet versatile and fast primes. the complete SIGMA I series, including the new 20mm F2 DG DN. Image credit: SIGMA Lens design The lens design consists of 13 elements in 11 groups, including three high-precision aspherical lens elements, an SLD element, and an FLD element to suppress a range of optical aberrations. As a result, according to SIGMA, the image is clear and sharp, even in the far corners of the frame. Lens design of the new 20mm F2. Image credit: SIGMA Furthermore, SIGMA states that by focusing on the suppression of sagittal coma flare, precise reproduction of very bright points of light has been achieved. This also produces detailed results across the entire image, which is especially important for photographing the night sky. image credit: SIGMA In terms of coating, SIGMA uses Super Multi-Layer Coating and Nano Porous Coating (NPC), which ensures minimal flare and ghosting when capturing bright light sources. Just like with the other I series lenses, this sturdy construction makes the 20mm F2 DG DN prime lens a trusty companion for outdoor filmmakers and photographers. According to SIGMA, all the parts are being made using the same metalworking technology as in SIGMA’s Cine Lens line-up. coated vs uncoated. Image credit: SIGMA The lens features an inner focus system with a high-speed stepping motor when flipping the switch into AF mode. When choosing the L-Mount variant, you also can switch between linear and non-linear focus ring settings. Another L-mount exclusive is the support for the Sigma USB Dock UD-11 (sold separately). For manual operation, the lens also features an aperture ring.
