A new camera always leads to a plethora of new accessories around it. Especially camera cages seem to be quite popular in this respect. And why not, they add certain features to the camera in question, make it easy to rig it up to taste, and even provide protection for the precious gear. SmallRig is always pretty quick with new accessories for freshly announced cameras and this cage for the BMPCC 6K Pro is no exception.

The new Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera ( BMPCC) 6K Pro is a bit bulkier than its predecessors because it also has built-in ND filters (read our article here). Therefore, existing cages for these cameras will not fit the BMPCC 6K Pro model.

SmallRig is usually one of the first camera accessory manufacturers to bring fitting cages to market, and they’ve done it once again. So without further ado, let’s take a look at the brand new cage for the BMPCC 6K Pro!

This new accessory from SmallRig is what you would normally call a “full cage” but with a twist. It can actually be both a full cage or a half cage, as one half can be removed. This can be helpful if you want to add extra mounting points to the camera, but keep the whole thing as slim as possible.

Another nice touch is the included slot for an external SSD (Samsung T5). With it you can record externally straight to the SSD from which you then can start your edititng process – but please don’t forget to create at least one backup! For this to work you need an additional piece, the “T5 SSD Clamp & USB-C Cable Clamp 3300”, which mounts directly to the T5 SSd and secures the USB-C cable.

Of course this new cage makes use of the two (!) 1/4″ threads on the bottom of the BMPCC6K Pro. This is very helpful to securely attach the cage to the camera. The bottom of the cage itself also offers several options for attaching a tripod plate.

The cage offers a cold shoe mount and it also adds support for various other accessories, HDMI and USB-C cable clamps for example, a variety of top handles, side handles and so on. Feel free to build your own rig! The whole thing is made out of aluminium alloy so it is, just like any other SmallRig cage, pretty sturdy and lightweight (300g).

The cage is also compatible with the quick release plate found on the DJI Ronin RS2 gimbal.

The cage attaches to the camera using three screws: Two on the bottom and one on the top. This is quite important as Blackmagic Design states that if you want to use a top handle you definitely should use a proper cage (such as this one) to mount the handle to it and NOT directly to the single thread on the top of the camera. It’s simply to weak to hold the weight of the camera.

The only downside, if you will, is the fact that you can no longer mount Blackmagic Design’s battery grip with this cage.

The new SmallRig BMPCC 6K Pro cage will start shipping April 30th and you can pre-order it directly from their site. The cage sells for $83.90 (regular price: $99).
