The Yongnuo YN50mm F1.8S DA DSM is a new sub $100 APS-C format E-Mount lens from Hong Kong based manufacturer Yongnuo.

Yongnuo have been making very affordable Canon and Nikon mount lenses for a number of years now. The YN50mm F1.8S DA DSM lens is its first for Sony E-Mount. Pricing hasn’t yet been announced but it’s expected to sell for under $100.

This lens is intended for use with the Sony a6000 mirrorless camera, and other a6xxx series cameras. It features a stepper motor drive as opposed to a DC motor and promises “fast start and stop response, high focusing accuracy and quieter focusing action” according to Yongnuo.

It has an electronic focus ring, which provides smooth, high precision manual focus. The lens is firmware upgradeable via USB. The latest firmware can be downloaded from the Yongnou website.

The lens uses 7 groups of 8 elements and nanometer multi-layer coating to improve light transmittance and reduce ghosting and glare. The lens mount features gold plated contacts. The F/1.8 aputure should deliver some good bokeh, if it remains sharp wide open.

The YN50mm F1.8S DA DSM on APS-C will give you the full frame equivalent of about 75mm, making this lens ideally suited to portrait work.
