Edelkrone continues to expand its new Ortak program with the addition of the Skater 3D. If you are looking for an affordable tabletop dolly for your DSLR/mirrorless camera, this affordable product can easily add production value to your next project. Let’s take a closer look at it.

The Edelkrone Ortak program was launched a couple of months ago with the FlexTILT Head 3D; you can read our article here. If you are not familiar with the Ortak program, the concept is simple. First, you buy the Edelkrone kit which contains all the screws/joints/CNC machined aluminum parts that are not easy to replicate. Then, you find a 3D printer and print the STL model they give you. Finally, once you have all the necessary parts, you do the final assembly by yourself.

The Edelkrone Skater 3D is a 3D printable version of the Edelkrone Skater 2. The design is pretty simple; there are four wheels and a top platform with a 1/4″-20 screw. A 1/4″- 20 to 3/8″-16 mounting screw adaptor is included. You can mount every tripod head/magic arm on top of it. Also, it is compatible with the Edelkrone FlexTILT Head 3D.

If you keep the wheels straight, you can do simple push-in/push-out dolly shots. But, at the bottom, the two front wheels of the Skater 3D are bound and can rotate together to create circular motion around a subject. This is perfect for creating a “parallax effect” type of shots that are usually found in commercial/product videos/interviews.

This little tabletop dolly works only on a flat surface and can support a maximum payload of around 2.5 kg/5.5 lbs.

    Pricing and Availability

The Skater 3D kit retails for $29. Indeed, you will need to print the 3D parts by yourself, but it should not cost you a lot of money. The Skater 3D is available right now on the Edelkrone website.

What do you think of the Skater 3D, the second product in the Ortak Program? What type of product would you like to see next in the Ortak Program? Let us know in the comments!
