Tilta, the Chinese third-party accessories manufacturer, just released its rigging solution for the full-frame Sony PXW-FX9: the Tilta Camera Cage. Behind this name, there is a top plate, a battery plate, a base plate, a side plate, and 15mm LWS rod adapters on the front end. That’s a lot of plates to talk about, let’s take a closer look at it!

Tilta Camera Cage for Sony PXW-FX9

The Sony PXW-FX9 – Sony’s latest flagship full frame cinema camera – has been out in the field for a couple of months now. When a new camera comes out, it’s now a habitude, but a couple of third-party accessories are launched to make your life easier on set. Indeed, after the Zacuto FX9 Recoil Rig, SHAPE Rig and accessories, and Wooden Camera kit that we already covered, Tilta is joining the game with its Tilta Camera Cage for the FX9.

The Tilta Camera Cage for the Sony PXW-FX9 consists of several parts, including:

    • A top plate that features several 1/4″-20 and 3/8″-16 threaded holes to mount accessories. The top plate fits around the Sony PXW-FX9 top handle, so you don’t need a third-party top handle, and you can continue using the LCD-mount that comes with the camera. Also, two 15mm LWS rod adapters are included. You can mount these on the top plate to easily relocate the camera’s viewfinder or mount a follow-focus motor.
    • A baseplate that attaches to the bottom of the FX9. You can attach 15mm rods to the front and back of the baseplate. Next to the front rods, there is a built-in universal lens adapter support bracket to support lens-mount adapters or heavy lenses. To mount the baseplate onto a tripod, there is a Sony VCT-U14 mounting plate, but you can change it to Tilta Standard. Finally, for handheld shooting scenarios, there is a shoulder pad under the baseplate as well as two ARRI standard rosettes on each side if you want to attach handles.

    • A battery plate that attaches via four bolts to the back of the FX9. It sits flush to the back of the camera, but you can extend it further back to balance your rig on your shoulder better. The Tilta battery plate gives you three D-tap output ports, as well as two 14.8V 2-pin Lemo outputs. The battery plate is available in Gold-Mount or V-Mount. Finally, there is a modular 4-pin XLR power input port.
    • Finally, there is a side plate that attaches via four screws to the base plate and top plate. It gives you an extra layer of protection and features a couple of 1/4″-20 and 3/8″-16 threaded holes to attach accessories.

    Pricing and Availability

The Tilta Camera Cage for Sony PXW-FX9 is available now and retails for $999. Price-wise, the Tilta Camera Cage is aggressively priced against other options like Wooden Camera ($1757.00) or Zacuto ($1100.00 without a battery plate).
