The SmallRig Mini Matte Box Pro and Mini Matte Box Lite are based on the original Mini Matte Box design. While the Pro version features an upgraded flag system, the Lite model aims to keep weight and size to a minimum. They are now available for $139 and $69 respectively. Last year, we covered the release of the original SmallRig Mini Matte Box. Directly competing with the popular Tilta Mini Matte Box, this product features an overall well-thought-out design and an extremely accessible price of $99. The recently-released SmallRig Mini Matte Box Pro and Lite aren’t really “new” products. However, they introduce minor changes to the original design that many professionals will appreciate. Let’s take a closer look. SmallRig Mini Matte Box Pro. Source: SmallRig Pro and Lite versions: overview Like the original Mini Matte Box, the Pro and Lite versions can be directly mounted on lenses with a front diameter of up to 95mm. SmallRig offers several adapter rings for lenses ranging from 52 to 86mm. These matte boxes can simultaneously accommodate one circular filter and up to two rectangular filters (4×5.65” or 4×4”). The filter tray system seems to be very well-made. It features a multi-point silicon lining to protect the filter and a carrying handle to avoid leaving fingerprints. Now let’s move on to what’s new. In fact, the top flag has been re-designed and is now equipped with side wings that can open up to 40°. Moreover, side flags have been added as well and they should provide more precise control over undesired flares and glares. SmallRig Mini Matte Box Pro. While the original kit only included one filter tray, the company is now offering an extra tray with the Pro version. Furthermore, new trays for 4×4” filters, which are usually less expensive, have also been released. SmallRig 4×4″ Matte Box Filter Tray. In fact, the threaded holes at the top and bottom of the original Mini Matte Box have been removed in order to achieve an even lighter setup, weighing only 108g. Thus the Lite version could be an ideal solution for gimbal or aerial applications as well as run-and-gun setups. SmallRig Mini Matte Box Lite.
