During IBC 2019, also announced a new E-mount lens to be added to its already comprehensive line-up of glass: the Sony FE C 16-35mm T/3.1 G. This lens is a cinema lens which can also be controlled with AF, and it is compatible with all E-mount Full-Frame cameras, including the recently announced Sony FX9. Let’s take a closer look at this lens.

    Sony FE C 16-35mm T/3.1 G

The Sony FE C 16-35mm T/3.1 G is Sony’s latest G master Full-Frame compatible lens. Indeed, this lens is compatible with the latest Sony FX9 camera but also with every other Alpha camera and even the Sony VENICE.

Sony is already teasing other Cinema G series lenses.

The lens design consists of two XA (Extreme Aspherical) elements, three aspheric lenses, and two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glasses to reduce color distortions. On top of that, a Nano AR (Anti Reflection) coating should minimize lens flares and ghosting.

Like a more traditional “cinema lens” the Sony FE C 16-35mm T/3.1 G features three distinct rings: one for the focus, one for the zoom, and one for the aperture. On each lens ring, there is an industry-standard 0.8mm pitch gear, so you can easily use a F.I.Z wireless focus system. The front ring is 115mm, which is also industry-standard for matte boxes.

The aperture design consists of 11 circular blades that should result in nice looking bokeh. Also, you can de-click the aperture ring for precise manual adjustment. On the side of the lens, there is a servo zoom motor that you can detach if you don’t need it.

    The Best of Both Worlds

The Sony FE C 16-35mm T/3.1 G is a versatile lens that you can use in cinema configurations, but that also works perfectly for one-man-band filmmakers. Indeed, this lens inherits from features that can only be found on photography lenses like autofocus and auto-exposure and is therefore also well-paired with the impressive autofocus of the Sony FX9. Pricing and Availability

The Sony FE C 16-35mm T/3.1 G should be available in Spring 2020. We were told during the Sony event that pricing should be around €6000.00, but it’s not final.

What do you think of this new Sony FE C 16-35mm T/3.1 G? Do you think it’s a good zoom lens to go with the FX9? Let us know in the comments!
